M-64-National Italian Heritage Month
On Nov. 18, 2016, I introduced my Private Members' Motion, declaring June as Annual National Italian Heritage Month and on May 17, 2017 it was passed unanimously in the House of Commons.
This motion is in recognition of the contributions Italian-Canadians have made to Canada. It provides a designated month to celebrate the richness of the Italian language and culture, and the importance of educating and reflecting upon Italian-Canadian accomplishments and heritage for future generations.
“Having the second largest constituency of Italian-Canadians in the country, and seeing first-hand the hard work and entrepreneurship that is the hallmark of the Italian community, I am honoured to champion this initiative. I feel it is important to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of generations of Italian-Canadians. It is equally important to all Canadians because it demonstrates the value of multiculturalism and celebrates Italian Canadian contributions in making Canada one of the most desirable countries in the world.”
Italy’s national holiday, Festa della Repubblica, is celebrated on June 2nd each year and the entire month holds great historical significance for the Italian community worldwide.
The province of Ontario passed Bill 103, an act to proclaim June as Italian Heritage Month. Motion 64 is intended to replicate the Ontario Italian Heritage Month Act for Canada.
